Tiger’s seat

The latest story idea that I have been toying with, is an idea of Tiger getting comfortable in places where people would prefer he wasn’t. Tiger has been parking himself in Mum & Dad’s bed, the computer chair & even the wash basket! Whilst some places are somewhat appropriate, his family face a battle to encourage Tiger back to the warmth of his cat basket.

Nobody wants their cat getting too comfy in their wash basket, nobody wants to disturb Tiger when they climb into bed & nobody wants to sit on Tiger when they settle down to watch telly or get down to some work on the computer. This will make up a humorous story which focuses on little things that pets do to wind us up, remind us that they need basic training & best of all, remind us that they make us laugh & love them with their funny quirks!

Enjoy these few samples & I shall hopefully be back soon to introduce you to my latest pigeon race story samples & the family’s bee keeping antics.

Take care!

Tiger visits space

On his latest adventure, Tiger has been visiting space. Joining Tiger on this adventure was his canary friend who is determined to race him to the moon. But who will win?

I had a lot of fun working with this story, as it allowed me to experiment with overlaying, patterned plastic sheets, sequins and pastel dusting effects to really capture the twinkles and atmosphere with what we associate with being out there.

I also felt that this story used two of our favourite characters well, allowing them to teach about planets on their journey whilst providing the fun element of the race.

As previously mentioned, I have also been dedicating some time to stories based around my bird characters and their associated characteristics. These stories are coming along nicely and I hope to post up some examples here soon.

Recently, for my birthday, I received a new sewing machine which will certainly come in handy for the craft side of things, but besides that, I hope to experiment with the usage of stitching in my illustrations and to see how effectively it works. Stitching as part of illustration certainly isn’t anything new, but I will enjoy seeing how it works alongside my style.

Until next time, enjoy yourselves and stay creative!

Take care

Tiger goes to space

Hi everyone,

Besides showing off my latest Tiger based imagery, I have a couple of happy announcements to make…

Firstly, I am now an official member of the AOI, so I therefore feel that I have been able to take a big step into the “real” world of illustration and really get some sound advice regarding what I should do next.

Secondly, I was very pleased to secure my first ever permanent job last week! I have been working for the past four years after years of education, but as many people will know about the modern working world, it is not easy to get more than a temporary role at present. Thankfully all of this has now changed and I can look forward to making plans surrounding my future.

Onto my illustration antics, I recently rummaged through my collection of papers and sketchbooks, and found my black paper sketchbook hidden away amongst it all. You can probably guess what sprung to mind from the title of this entry… Tiger in space!

I instantly began to gather all relevant colour schemes and pulled together a few cute images as follows:

My room has deteriorated to the state it was during my time as an Illustration degree student, but I am keen to really get stuck into using the various papers and sketchbooks to the best that they can be!

Until next time, have fun and try not to eat too much chocolate!

New friends!

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while, but amongst preparing for job interviews and studying an online course in web design, I have been working very hard with Tiger and all of his friends.

Whilst Tiger’s stories are developing nicely (particularly his zoo story) I thought I would use today to introduce the creation of a few new friends.

Besides Tiger, my biggest focus has been on Canary so far, but I couldn’t help but be inspired by other birds and their day to day goings on. All the time, I have been considering how I can incorporate these new characters into cute new stories.

First there were pigeons and their battles for chips…

Then there was the parrot who yearned to talk with humans.

Finally, there was the separation between flamingos and the hope of resolved friendships.

These are a series of short stories which will possibly be combined with a story based around Tiger. The flamingos originated in Tiger’s trip to the zoo, but I felt that there was the potential for a whole new story involving them.

So far, these stories don’t feature any scenery, and I need to debate (with your help which would always be appreciated) to decide whether these characters work well enough without any scenery.

Until next time, take care, and wish me luck in my upcoming job interview (eek!)

Card Designs

Hi everyone,

As I have been busy developing scenery and accompanying scene enhancements for Tiger’s adventures, I have also put aside a bit of time for another project which I am keen to develop, cards!

Having recently enjoyed a week’s holiday in Blackpool, I packed a reasonable amount of materials, and got to work on the basics after a day of strolls along the prom.

Here are some of the initial sketches:

These were some of the designs that I felt worked well, and with there being no story to plan and no necessary background decoration, I feel this will be something that I can churn out a lot quicker alongside my stories.

So, for now, please enjoy these images and I shall keep you updated with Tiger’s adventures along the way. Whilst in Blackpool, I was able to return to their zoo and gather inspiration for background imagery to go along with the animals I drew quite some time ago, so perhaps a certain zoo story may appear very soon.

Until next time, take care!

Best wishes

Trying to fit in

Hi everyone,

I have recently presented a new family of very fashionable looking characters to accompany Tiger on his adventures. Of course, now that I know what the characters look like, I have since had the job of inserting them into ready built scenes and situations.

Here are some layout tracings, where I had to draw the characters’ and their positions upon the scene at hand:

Once I was able to get the positioning of each character right, I then had to draw them up properly and hope that they fitted in smoothly with the rest of the scene. Here were the results:

As things are continuing to build and build, I now feel that the biggest thing missing is the accompanying scenery. Some pages work better plain or with a small image amongst a clean slate, but I am missing a large amount of scenery in general, and having come up with these results so far, and viewing them in their current state, I feel that the drawing up of scenery needs to be my next step.

I am currently pulling together some scenery ideas, and drawing them into ready made scenes in the same way as I did my characters.

Here are some sketches, along with ideas of graphic styles to incorporate into the surroundings…

So there you have it.

I see this as being quite a major and perhaps a final step in the creation of full on storybook illustrations. Of course I shall look forward to presenting you with my updates as I go along, and we can debate certain things which look good, bad, better or worse.

For now, I shall love you and leave you with this blog entry, which has quite a lot of imagery!

Until next time, take care.

Meet the family!

Hi everyone,

I am proud to finally be able to present Tiger’s family.

It took me a while to decide on exactly who Tiger should live with, but I did eventually decide on a full on family, made up of a mum, dad, son and daughter.

I have named the son and daughter Brady and Clancy, which I thought were cute names and ones that are also not heard too often. Their parents will just be known as mum and dad for the time being, as I have still not decided on a name, and maybe it will just be better that way. Recently I noticed a hint of disappointment on a breakfast show presenter’s face when he learned of Mr Benn’s first name, you mean his name wasn’t just Mr Benn?! So maybe a lack of name is somewhat inspired.

A large amount of Tiger’s time will be spent with either Brady or Clancy. Brady has required a lot of patience, as I have been working with striped collage for his jumper, whereas Clancy’s top has drawn on texture with watercolour shading.

I am now in the process of developing other sketches up to this standard and then working on bringing finalised stories together. I have recently finished a temporary job, so whilst looking out for new opportunities, I am keeping myself busy with this happy family!

I am yet to really consider the characters’ hobbies and interests, and what would really make them stand out, but this will begin to develop with a bit of time, and I shall look forward to seeing it all blossom.

Until next time, enjoy yourselves and take care!

Best wishes from Tiger, Brady, Clancy, Mum, Dad, and not forgetting me!
